If Everybody Had An Ocean

I'm definately going to O'Reilly's Emerging Technology Conference -- like signing up and spending real money -- to hear some great people speak, Liz Lawley, Sam Ruby, JC Herz, Cory Doctorow and many others, as well as see some friends there, Doc Searls, David Weinberger, Joi Ito (are you guys speaking? I'm confused about that) but my ulterior motive is to FINALLY bite the bullet and really do some surfing -- off the Net surfing -- the real kind.

I've heard there are some terrific surfing schools around San Diego and Carlsbad -- a pretty little town right on the ocean north of San Diego -- and I'm going to spend the week after the O'Reilly conference finally learning to surf. Please tell me if you know of any great or not so great surfing schools there. I'm looking into this one.

Despite having lived in SoCal for years, I've never surfed. But when I lived in the San Diego area, I was told that THE folks to learn from were the Paskowitz family. The web site sucks, but I believe that you can still contact them about private instruction.

Halley, WITH comments! How wonderful! I think I'm going to try to make eTech next year too, bundle of joy permitting. Good for you on the surfing, you should definitely come hang out in Newport as well.

(Woah, what time zone are we in on this blog? It's not 2:50 a.m. anywhere in the U.S. ...)

Denise = Can't wait to see you. My motto has always been bring the baby along if you can't arrange for a good sitter. I'm quite the diaper technologist, not to worry!

Halley,

I heard that the Paskowitz' were great to learn from. You can also contact surfdiva.com or for an unbiased viewpoint Ed at club-ed.com a surf camp in Santa Cruz. All the schools know each other. Have fun!
