Gadgets or communication tools?
The Pew Internet and American Life Project issued a report on the Consumption of Information Goods and Services in the United States yesterday. The report concludes that "There is a trendsetting technology elite in the U.S. who chart the course for the use of information goods and services." Within this elite group of techies, "wired women like tools to communicate, not gadgets to show off."

Well, this kind of answers the earlier question about why women bloggers aren't, apparently, as well-read as men. I hear this study saying that women communicate while men info-gather. If this is true, and if one accepts that most people use the Internet primarily to find information, then it is little wonder that the communicators trail the information hawkers, numbers-wise.
Anyway, just an observation...

And it's interesting that pagers aren't considered communications gear. At first blush, they are. But given that the messages are one-way and usually short, I can see why that would be more of a male than female item.
Fully agree about "Internet as information source" as compared to "Internet as communications medium". Communication services and software just don't have the cachet of Google.

"Techie women are less likely to have the hardware gadgets that one might clip to the belt (excepting cell phones), than techie men"
How many women actually clip hardware gadgets to their belts? Personally, I carry everything in a bag or a coat pocket. I wonder if designers cater their designs more to the belt carrying crowd than the purse toting crowd, and if this has any impact on the adoption of digital devices by tech oriented men vs tech oriented women. Let me clarify for the record that I don't believe gadgets should be explicitly gendered (like the example of the cell phone for women).
I have a hard enough time sometimes remembering to grab my cell phone, wallet, keys, and iPod before running out the door in the morning. Is there an ideal way to carry digital devices to simplify this process that would appeal to both men and women?

Sure. Surgically implanting them. But it hasn't become popular yet.

denise -- I find I have the same issue, sans iPod :(
I loathe most purses, because everything ends up in a big pile at the bottom; backpacks don't really have that professional flair, and clipping to the belt? no way.
my dream is of a foldup thing, like an old-fashioned tool pouch (like thieves' tools in D&D always seem to be drawn!) that would have pockets that actually match the gear I want to carry.
once folded, it'd be comfortable to carry, and could presumably be styled like a messenger bag, a backpack, or even a purse. ;)
(one can dream, I guess.)
