Les Seules: The "Swedish Girls of Gaming"

Via the CNN web site, I found out today about Les Seules, an all-girl gaming team that's taking aim against the boys in computer gaming.

"We want to show the rest of the world that guys and girls can play on the same level," team member Louise Thomsen (code name: AurorA) told The Associated Press amid the geeky flurry on the floor of DigitalLife, a four-day technology and entertainment convention.

[...]

The girls take their gaming very seriously. The squad has a professional coach, manager and an Olympian-like training schedule. They practice online for five hours a day, six days a week outside of their regular studies and work. On the eve of competitions, they physically come together to cram during all-night "Counterstrike" killing sessions.

"It's so different playing with girls because you can talk about everything," said Sofie Sandager (code name: Zelena). "You can have a really good relationship outside the game. Everybody understands you. It's like having sisters."

Being a young guy that has been gaming for so long my Hanimex isn't even known by most people it's great to see the Girls kicking some butt, I don't play CounterStrike but I have spent many hours teaching people how to play games of various kinds and systems, and I've always found girls are better gamers...usually taking it up a little slower, it seems to be just a confidence thing but once they are good at it they keep at it and make great team-mates and foes. I'll play a few rounds of Tie-Fighter vs. X-Wing with my girl mates anyday, (that multi-tasking thing they are biologically inclined to be better at makes them very hard opponents, and better pilots to boot, this is due to the fact that the male brain tends to be rather specialized. This means that males use one side of their brains at a time. Also, this means that males can't multi-task. When we're doing something our brain tends to cut the used side of our brain off from the other side. This keeps males concentrated on the task at hand. This 'severance' is caused by a smaller Corpus Collosum, the part that connects the two hemispheres of the brain. The Corpus Collosum, strangely enough, is larger in women. This allows them to be more aware of the things happening around them while doing a specific task. A larger Corpus Collosum also allows females to multi-task far better than most males.) So good on you The Outsiders, keep it up and kill the stereotypical nerd view and we'll all be happy. Hey Girls, try Runescape...it's a very male-dominated environment, (as usual) but there are many people that claim to be female players, so give it a go because it could be for you...

Happy Gaming!
